Community Gardens

Each year, The Big Garden offers grants to schools, faith communities, non-profits, and other organizations who are interested in starting community gardens in their location. These entities become official Big Garden sites, receiving free seeds and seedlings annually, regular technical support, access to our volunteer network for projects, and educational programming in the first three years. To date, the Big Garden has helped to start more than 170 community gardens in Nebraska, Kansas, and Southwest Iowa. The Big Garden also offers small grants for existing Big Garden sites to build high tunnels, pathways, or other structures.

Basic Resource Considerations

Is the land relatively level? If no, please describe terrain or grade:

If planning on gardening directly in ground, has the soil been tested for lead contamination? The EPA's guidelines state that levels under 400 ppm are safe, but The Big Garden doesn't like to plant in soil that has more than 90 ppm, especially when working with children.

If planning on growing directly in the ground, do soil amendments need to be made (e.g. adding compost)?

How is water drainage at the site? Are there any issues with the proposed site flooding or retaining pools of water?

Do you have a large number of trees or land clearing concerns?

Is there a water source at your near the garden? Where is it located (approximate feet)?

If no, what is your plan for getting water to the garden?

Does the garden space get at least 7-8 hours of sunlight during the growing season?
