The Big Garden began in 2005 with a goal of creating 12 community gardens in Omaha in 3 years. A little over ten years later, we have worked with schools, faith communities, and other non-profits to start more than 160 community gardens across Nebraska, Kansas, and Southwest Iowa!

We hold an open application season for new gardens during the winter months. Applicants are selected based on need and our capacity+funding. Priority is given to schools, faith communities, and organizations where we feel we can make the biggest impact.

Note: Because of the rapid growth of our garden educational programming over the past three years, we have made the strategic decision to limit the number of new gardens that we develop in 2018 & 2019. We feel this is necessary in order to maintain the high quality services that our program partners expect. Please contact Nathan Morgan at to inquire about potential new gardens for the 2019 growing season.
