Seed: The Untold Story (movie & discussion)

Few things on Earth are as miraculous and vital as seeds. Worshipped and treasured since the dawn of humankind. SEED: The Untold Story follows passionate seed keepers protecting our 12,000 year-old food legacy. In the last century, 94% of our seed varieties have disappeared. As biotech chemical companies control the majority of our seeds, farmers, scientists, lawyers, and indigenous seed keepers fight a David and Goliath battle to defend the future of our food. In a harrowing and heartening story, these reluctant heroes rekindle a lost connection to our most treasured resource and revive a culture connected to seeds. SEED features Vandana Shiva, Dr. Jane Goodall, Andrew Kimbrell, Winona Laduke and Raj Patel. 94 minutes.

Omaha Gives

12:00 AM00:00

Omaha Gives

Omaha Gives is an online fundraising event to raise awareness and support for Omaha-area nonprofits. Omaha Gives day is May 24th, but donations can be pre-scheduled online anytime May 1-24th.

At The Big Garden, we work with neighbors from many diverse backgrounds:
immigrants and refugees, inner-city schoolkids, urban hipsters, small-town church ladies, and everyone in between! We believe that healthy food is a basic right and everyone should have access to seeds and land to grow their own food, skills to cook & preserve it, and fresh produce on the dinner table.

This May, you can show your support for all our neighbors by making a donation to The Big Garden during Omaha Gives. When you give to The Big Garden, you are supporting programs that ensure our neighbors have skills to grow and eat healthy produce. Your donation will help our neighbors have access to seeds & seedlings, community gardens, children's classes, and free workshops. Because learning to grow healthy food is not a privilege but a right that all our neighbors should enjoy.

Donate at: https://www.omahagives.org/thebiggarden

In addition, we hope you will join us for Happy Hour in the Garden at our campus May 24th, 5-7pm.

Happy giving!

3rd Annual Seed Share

Join us for our 3rd Annual Seed Share at Omaha Whole Living in the GIfford Park Neighborhood!

Please bring your labelled garden seeds to share (if you are able). Even if you do not have seeds to share you are welcome! We will have plenty to go around. Please do not bring seeds older than 2014. We will have seed packets for you to select seeds, as well as folks available to assist you.

In addition to the seed share tables we have other FREE resources to share with our community --
seed-starting demonstrations
handouts on a variety of gardening topics
art projects for kids
and healthy snacks!

Saving and sharing seeds is an act of resistance in a time when companies are trying to own rights to seeds and food production. Food and the means to grow our own is for all people! Sharing seeds is an opportunity to for us to come together as a more resilient and self-sufficient community.
